Spent the weekend assembling my very basic Smith machine. Was shopping for something I could do lateral pulldowns and cable rows on to carefully repair and strengthen my back and shoulders, but when I compared the price difference to the cost of a local gym membership, I realized it was worth it for the other exercises I could add. (A lot of my weight work is closer to physical therapy than "lifting," depending on the joints involved.) Thing is, weights motivate me better than any other form of exercise. Adding another rep or two, or adding more weight, is measurable proof of improvement.

I remember reading this on Ye Olden Blogge, and thinking these were wise words. And agreeing, more people should lift, attempt to lift heavy, fail, improve until they fail again, and repeat.

Lo, these years later, and my opinion has not changed.

Now, where's my damn gym card....
