Spent the weekend assembling my very basic Smith machine. Was shopping for something I could do lateral pulldowns and cable rows on to carefully repair and strengthen my back and shoulders, but when I compared the price difference to the cost of a local gym membership, I realized it was worth it for the other exercises I could add. (A lot of my weight work is closer to physical therapy than "lifting," depending on the joints involved.) Thing is, weights motivate me better than any other form of exercise. Adding another rep or two, or adding more weight, is measurable proof of improvement.

Reminds me a little of the late William Smith's "the Riddle of Steel" monologue from "Conan the Barbarian":

"You must learn its discipline. For no one -- no one in this world can you trust. Not men, not women, not beasts... This you can trust."

And steel is simply iron made stronger.
