Read that he had died, turned to the wife and said, 'Huh. May be we'll get a Catholic Pope this time'.

Yeah, the snark started early with me.

"...standing between the thugs and the parishioners with a Browning Hi-Power, loudly praying that the head thug gets right with Jesus...."

That's a story I'd like to hear more of. (Not just because I loves me my BHPs)

I did not like Francis at all. He is one of the reasons I am no longer a practicing Catholic. I'll just leave it at that.

As a Catholic who regularly attends Services, I will say that I have no animosity towards Pope Francis. While I strongly disagree with the Socialist view about religion he espoused; I agreed that we needed more tolerance and understanding of each other. I think he was internally conflicted regarding the absolute teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and his desire for forgiveness of sin.

I agree that the application of John Moses Browning's finest creations upon those who dare interrupt services of the Faithful or upon organizations serving the Mission of the Church, is quite appropriate and not out of line with the teachings of Jesus.

Indeed. Too many forget when asking "What Would Jesus Do?" that on one occasion whipping with knotted cords was involved.

I tried to give Francis the benefit of the doubt, but eventually lost patience and found a church that was obviously about Christ, not Marx. I know many others who did likewise. I pray God has mercy on his soul, but His patience for false shepherds is...notable.

So I count you, Randy, Behemoth the Cat, me and probably others that haven't weighed in yet who are BHP fans. When I think of BHP's I see "churchly" things...Jesus, Satan, even our Pope.

I'll get the niceties out of the way first. RIP. There were plenty of public and private recriminations against the late Pope Francis while he was alive, which he never seemed to adequately address. Whether he trusted God or Marx to guide his hand at the tiller is something we can speculate about without trying to dishonor the man. The upside of Pope Francis' reign? He never spoke ex cathedra when penning or mouthing his errancies, to my knowledge. Thank you, Il Papa for that.

=>"I’m old enough and wise enough to understand that religion is a necessary pain in the butt for society as a whole."

This is one of the exceptionally important points that a lot of practitioners of the "other paths" often forget. And it's important!

Even if you practice and follow a 'higher truth' than the average bear, you must remember that the average bears probably don't have the time and interest necessary to follow your path. And as many problems as it crates, the current crop of mainstream religions provide some VERY necessary things to the general populous.

Pope Francis was a pope of the corrupt world and money.

He denied traditional Mass to Catholics and many many many other horrible things were done by him.

I grew up Catholic, and still consider myself Catholic. But my wife grew up Baptist, her dad is a preacher, and we've attended mostly Baptist churches since we've been married. About half the time the one her dad preaches at. Pope Francis was a little too openly political and hypocritical for my liking, even my parents found a lot of fault in what he spoke about.

Also on the, someone pointed out to me this week, that after their deaths, the college of cardinals can declare a Pope to be an Anti-Pope, And this has happened around 30 times in the past.
