It's been raining every day for the last two weeks in the Pacific NorthWet.
Depending on how that fireplace was sealed, it might be possible to open it back up again. As long as Fortunato isn't walled up in there wondering where the promised Amontillado is.
Yeah, it was up in the sixties when I read this initially. It's currently thirty-eight according to the thermometer that I'm looking at. Why did you send that east?
completely agree! Folks don't like the cold, but a good long, cold winter does wonders for nature - and keeping those darn bugs in check!
WV's winter started fairly early for us, and we've been colder than average for the last few weeks and are predicted to remain that way for at least 2 more (though as my mother likes to remind me "it was colder than this in the 70's!).
I just hope we don't get the overly warm blackberry winter in February we're prone to. I despite getting warmups into the 60's and sometimes the 70's for 2 or 3 weeks in February, long enough to bring out the plums and the peach trees, only for the temps to plunge back below freezing in March and killing everything.
My place has a fireplace, but it didn't get properly inspected for the sale. I'll get by until spring, and have it inspected, and cleaned so I will know it is safe to use for next winter.
At least I am still somewhat acclimated to the winters in the Northeast for now! (I very much doubt I will still tolerate the cold nearly as well next year.)
If I use the fireplace, I risk burning the house down. :D (It pulled away from my house when the foundation shifted and returned to place when we fixed it, but it needs to be serviced.) Bundling up and throwing on a dog.
To keep the pipes from freezing a simple trick is to let the faucet farthest from the main, or by the most exposed to cold pipe, run a trickle of water.
Up north, on the other border, we’ve been in brrr mode for awhile now, though it was pretty mild most of December .But this cold snap is coming on my days off with no snow, so I don’t have to spend much time outside. Today’s high is expected to be -1. Currently it’s-11 in Fargo at 1000 AM. Keep warm

I want a plum harvest this year, Mother Nature!
It is very nice to get up and start a fire in the mornings when needed and... I had no idea figs would grow in this area.
Rita bought this one for me at Smith's Gardentown, I think it's a Celeste cultivar.
I shall have to look there in the spring.
We had a fig bush in Maryland, until the locusts destroyed it.

My house doesn't have a fireplace. And, it used to have the wall mounted gas space heaters. I wish it still did. They worked without electricity.
