Yesterday I learned that Federal Inmate #40087-083 finally kicked the bucket, which was about 32 years more than he deserved. Personally, I think he should have been blood eagle’d on the National Mall in 1994.
For those of you who are clueless as to the details of this little bugsnipe, Aldrich Ames was a CIA employee who — from 1985 until finally getting yoinked in 1994 — intentionally and knowingly revealed the identity of every single US intelligence asset known to him to the Soviet Union; as well as every single allied nation intelligence asset he was aware of, and every intelligence operation.
As one might expect this was disastrous. Not only did it allow the Soviet Union to feed misinformation and disinformation to the West through trusted sources — and to parcel out information as favours to terror organisations supported by the USSR — but it compromised — officially1 — at least 100 United States intel operations, an unknown number of allied nations intelligence operations, and directly caused the torture and execution of at least — again officially2 — ten United States assets.
For nine long years every name of every contact we had; every single detail of every operation we were running, everything that crossed his desk he happily sold to the KGB.
The damage that greedy amoral little pismire did to West during the Cold War is still being calculated.
I hope he spends eternity having what he condemned others to undergo done unto him. Over and over again.
