And Johnny Walker

Chief Warrant Officer Walker was a personal betrayal. He recruited a Senior Chief shipmate, his older LCDR brother and his E-3 son into his spy ring. Walker sold crypto key lists to the Soviets which enabled them to decode almost all of the Navy's classified message traffic from 1967 to 1983. I was a Navy CWO on a Guided Missile Frigate in 1985 when Walker was arrested. Shortly thereafter, everyone in the Navy who handled cryptographic key lists (in the CMS system) was relieved and most of the crypto equipment was replaced, deinstalled, destroyed with sledgehammers and deep-sixed.

Walker never had remorse, he was proud to have been a damn good spy. I hope that reptile has been stoking coal in Satan's furnace since August 28, 2014 with Celine Dion's greatest hit playing on a loudspeaker 24/7.

And I understand the larcenous bastard did it purely for money. If I'm not mistaken, didn't some of the initial intel he sold end up helping the Norks seize the Pueblo?

Walker became a spy in 1967, supplying the Soviets cryptographic key lists and other raw classified material. The North Koreans seized USS Pueblo (AGER-2), an American "spy ship", in 1968. I don't think Walker had anything to do with that, but the capture of USS Pueblo gave the Soviets access to the actual crypto hardware devices and that coupled with the cryptographic key lists (encryption and deciphering keys) supplied by Walker gave them access to all of our classified message traffic for nearly the next 2 decades. He did it for the money and I think to stroke his ego by being the perfect spy.

In 1983 when he was arrested, I was a Navy CWO2 OpTech assigned to a Guided Missile Frigate. OpTechs like me had sea assignments in communications, operations or sometimes electronics. At the time I was in an electronics billet, a rarer assignment for OpTechs, but I had the background and was able to wrangle the assignment from my Detailer who was a friend. I wanted to go to a Frigate where I could quickly qualify as a Fleet OOD and Surface Warfare Officer. Most first-tour OpTech's go to large Amphibs or Aircraft Carriers with huge wardrooms and smaller opportunities for a Warrant Officer to stand bridge watches. A Frigate's wardroom is just 14 men. Walker's perfidy was a huge betrayal to this country, to the Navy and to Navy Chief Warrant Officers and Navy Chief Petty Officers too. The bastard was one of us, a sailor, a Chief, a Warrant Officer. He was a monstrous embarrassment. That he got a plea deal to avoid the death penalty stuck in our craw.

Philby at least had the virtue of being a believer as opposed to simply selling to the highest bidder.

Mind, he was still a traitor to Crown and country, and I'm in no way defending him.

I've wondered about the similarities between the Cambridge Spies and certain sets of American leftists. There's an arrogant detachment from their country, society and history. It's downright creepy.

Spyworld has an acronym-MICE to explain motivation. Money, ideology, compromise, ego. Cambridge spies, Alger Hiss, the Rosenbergs, seemed to be ideology. Walker was money. Ames seems to be a mix of ego and compromise. Perhaps money too. He was married to another Soviet spy who had also worked for the CIA.

I had a coworker named Pollard (no relation). I felt very badly for her during this time. I went through similar when the Walker scandal hit. My maiden name isn't Walker, but does begin with a W. Seeing it plastered on the news for weeks was humiliating.

My deepest sympathies. There were several weeks in 1985 when I couldn't bear to use a check in the store. Of course, my aunt (CIA), my uncle (state) and dad's cousin (*ahem*...) had it worse.

The putz couldn't control his wife's spending and so he sold out CIA assets to the KGB. They had very nasty demises, in some cases. Some of which the KGB filmed and used as training material for their new recruits.
