And, when you take it out to use, and your pants fall down?
I know some people just wear a belt for decoration, but I wear mine to keep my pants up. Ain't no way I can use it as a weapon in a fight. (I have a hard enough time just going through security at the airport - "Put your hands up, sir." "If I do, my pants are gonna fall down, and you won't need the scanner." Thank goodness some places are not requiring your belt be removed now.)
"Before I go any further I must stress that you — personally — must research the weapons laws relevant to the State that you will be in."
And don't stop there. Gun control pre-emption laws are by no means universal, and Counties / Cities / School Districts / HOAs / etc are fond of imposing their own.
"Doesn’t mean you won’t run across one who’s way too invested in being a good company man, but they tend to be few and far between these days."
Be VERY careful with this one. I work for a Big 5 tech company that has all the sales collateral you could wish for on how to leverage the AI panopticon into enforcing "weapon-free zones". And the HQ AI will be happy to call the local PD to report a "man-with-a-gun". Las Vegas Costco 2.0, here we are. Safer for all concerned to just not darken their door.
Ian, the next "gun rights" fight will go something like this: if you have a business open to the public, you can't keep out people exercising their Second Amendment rights any more than you can keep out people based on race or religion.
Failing that, the idea should be that if you remove people's ability to defend themselves, you assume 100% liability for defending them.
I have asked the security staff about carrying in Casino's (I used to have a Nevada LTC). The rule was simple: Stay off the gaming 'floor' and by gaming floor, they meant the -carpet-. Not the tiled area around it. As long as you're away from the machines and the table games and off of the gaming floor proper, everything was fine.
So I would say talk to security and see what they say. I suspect it will be the same rule.
That's why I would talk to security. I've done it since then, but I check in with them first to find out what their policy is. I suspect that's the way the law is written.
When Son of Silvercon as at the Plaza year before last, they didn't want weapons (concealed or otherwise) on the gaming floor but they weren't concerned about having them in the rooms or function spaces. Still, better to ask and be safe than not ask and have casino security and the Metro cops on your ass.
"they didn't want weapons (concealed or otherwise) on the gaming floor"
Because Magic gamers are known for pulling out their Staff of John Moses Browning (+5) and smiting their opponents when they start to lose? Oy vey.
The real reason I hate the Safetyists is because they just assume everything everywhere is a threat. They're worse than sheep, and they don't mind if I'm sheared because of it.
Late to the party here, but my two pennies say "Don't be a jerk" and "Keep head out of hindquarters". If you're not comfortable in your own skin, you won't be comfortable when adding a weapon. Act accordingly. 🙂
I fear the day when I have to be as familiar with this subject as Ian is, since that means a whole lot of involved living will have happened against my will.
A high candela flashlight is generally universally accepted, multipurpose, and can double as a pocket stick, (hammerfist amplifier.) it can also solve a lot of problems before they become problems and pairs well with pepper spray where socially acceptable.
I carry Parker stainless steel ballpoints when traveling. Of recent, I've been carrying a German lock blade originally issued by the 1930s Wehrmacht and still in production [Mercator Black Cat]. When I was a courier, I carried an S&W Mod. 66 with a snubby barrel and a pocketful of speed loaders. These days it's a Hi-Power in a custom thigh holster I made; if I'm carrying a pistol I won't care who knows. I used to have a 36 inch cane made from 8/4 mahogany whose grip essentially was a duplicate of the pattern used on a London bobby's truncheon, circa 1920. Really need to turn another one.
On tactical pens: my nice pink (I so much like bright colors! Ask me about my Tactical Fanny Pack.), Schrade Tactical pen is more of a machined aluminum housing for a Fischer Space Pen refill. That's it! Holds an ink pen refill. 🔏
One of the nice things about Parker ballpoints is they're fairly common. Sturdily, but not obviously so, built. And I can look most inspectors in the eye and say "I bought this pen when your daddy didn't know what knickers were."
The last time I was asked why I had fountain pens and a couple of ballpoints I told them "Fountain pens are what I prefer, ballpoints do carbon copies." And throats. And eyes. And in a real pinch, I can trach some poor sod with mine.
I'm an engineer. I've carried a Pentel P205 drafting pencil for years. It's a pencil. However, it's very useful for that stabby thing should the need arise. Be forewarned though. Once you use it as such, it now becomes, ex post facto, a concealed weapon and all the local concealed weapon laws apply.
As to a concealed carry pistol, I recommend reading Greg Ellifritz article, "An Alternative Look at Handgun Stopping Power". I've compiled Greg's numbers into a spreadsheet. According to Greg's statistics, the lowly 22 Rimfire is equal to or better than many larger calibers.
My conclusion is most criminals & people with an alternative mentality do not want to get shot. Getting shot with a 22 is every bit as disastrous as getting shot with a 44. One ends up answering all those difficult questions. I carry a Taurus PT-22 in a pocket holster. Do your due diligence and make sure the gun works. Mine does.
Watch out for venues with metal detectors
Something else I picked up. A lunatic friend observed that a man is the only creature with two heads...and usually thinks with the one that doesn't have any brains. Don't stick your gun in the miscreants face. Aim for the head that they're thinking with.
I abide by hard NPE rules, but hate it. For me that means I have to leave my carry piece at home when I have to drive on a Navy base for a doctor's appointment. The damn hospital even removed their gate guards, no ID check, no random spot checks, no queries about contraband at the gate. Yet they still want me unarmed. Unarmed for the doctor visit and unarmed for the 2- 3 hour round trip (I also sit down for a huge fast food combo meal after my doctor compliments on even the tiniest bit of good health news.) I comply because it is the law and I could become a felon by not complying. Same hospital during COVID made everyone mask up and queried you at the gate about whether you had COVID systems and took your temperature with that gun-looking thingee that they thrust near your forehead with no damn warning. First time that happened I thought I was going to killed by an insane sailor going postal. Taught me a lesson. I froze instead of fighting for my life. <---which would have ended badly for me if I'd punched him under the circumstance.
For soft NPE's, I rarely shop at posted stores. BFYTW. If I really, really have to go inside, I am sure I can be cleaning my glasses on my shirt tail as I approach the entrance. My 20/400 vision will take care of the rest.
On 'other weapons'. I carry a leather whip with a heavy piece of steel on the end of it.
You can also wrap it around your fist so it hurts more if you hit someone with it.
People never notice it because I usually wear it around my waist to hold my pants up :-)
And, when you take it out to use, and your pants fall down?
I know some people just wear a belt for decoration, but I wear mine to keep my pants up. Ain't no way I can use it as a weapon in a fight. Wear suspenders.
But that's honestly, your problem. You need to figure out your solution.
Though I would suspect that your solution(s) aren't going to involve hand-to-hand. Some of mine do, for reasons.
Nice AOW.

Ugh. I hate living in the future sometimes.

I've been told the casinos are tightening up since the Mandalay Bay shooting in 2017, but that's second-hand.

Y'all not from around here (Nevada) are you?
meet a worthy successor to Massad Ayoob with a sense of humor!
perhaps, if you introduce him to the Pink Gorilla, he might be tickled enough to allow you to collaborate on the next edition of Stress Fire!
When I go into the city I carry in a hip holster covered by a long shirt or light jacket.
I pay attention to signs when I go in to places, and in one restaurant, the sign said, in Spanish.
"Es ilegal llevar un arma de fuego a este restaurante. Será arrestado y encarcelado por diez años."
There were no English Signs, no 51% signs, no 30.06, 30.07, or 30.05 signs (Open Carry, LTC, Permitless carry)
So I just ignored the sign and sat down to eat.
The food was subpar and not very satisfying so I won't eat there again.

What would VA hospitals count as? Not inside, but on the grounds?
As I recall, they have the federal official no-no signage.
The VA in North Las Vegas and the community clinics all have that signage at the gates and on the doors.

My non-permissive "totally not a weapon" inkstick of choice is the Zebra F-701. "Steel from clip to tip".
A. G. Spalding Brothers makes a nice, solid copper clicky pen that uses the same filler, too.

Far as I know, the fatwas are still in place on my fat crippled self. I will neither confirm nor deny carrying places I shouldn't.
