It’s always hard to say goodbye. I’ve got a 14 year old Staffordshire Terrier with bad arthritis who is probably not going to see the end of the year. I remember when I first saw her 14 years ago, when my wife brought her home, my first thought was “She will break my heart someday”. They always do. And it’s worth it, every time.
We had a rescue beagle-dachshund mix named Pardner when I was a kid. He also lived to 17. The hound in him gave him an incredible prey drive, plus a bark like a dog 4x his size.
I lost my Blue Heeler 24 years ago. We've never gotten another dog. Just don't have the heart to see that happen again. She is still missed. She went where I went.
"I have done mostly what most men do,
And pushed it out of my mind;
But I can’t forget, if I wanted to,
Four-Feet trotting behind.
Day after day, the whole day through—
Wherever my road inclined—
Four-Feet said, ‘I am coming with you!’
And trotted along behind.
Now I must go by some other round,—
Which I shall never find—
Somewhere that does not carry the sound
Of Four-Feet trotting behind."

"If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went."
Will Rogers
They are our finest companions, our greatest counselors, and our fiercest protectors.
God Speed to you and may the squirrels be slow and the beds soft.
Dogs are the best. Losing them is the worst. We don't deserve them, but they choose us anyway.
"Absent Friends" both human and furred

And you quote Watership Down at me. Dang it… right in the feels gland. I’m sorry for the loss of your goodboy.
Dogs give us all our best days...and one of the worst. My heart is crying for you and Rita.
Aww. So sorry for you both. The hardest thing about loving an animal is that we are very likely to outlive them. Requiescat in Pace.
My deepest condolences to you and Rita.
Sorry for your loss. Those 4 legged companions are the best!
Sorry for your loss. A good critter is nearly irreplaceable.
I am certain that no dog that was ever my companion wanted to cause me pain by dying. That's how good they are. Deepest condolences to you and yours.
It's just so hard to lose them...
