As an aside, Ian, please check with your web master about chroma keys. your current Blue font color is ok on the bright white background, but those of us with visual problems, who need Dark Mode, will likely find that the blue blurs into the darker background, just as the bright white tends to fuzz our cataracts!
I'd always wanted to thank Congress for posting the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, thereby giving the United States entire an excuse to celebrate my birthday 190-odd years later. And also for ensuring that I never have to take a vacation day to celebrate.
But in all seriousness, I couldn't agree more with Ian's post. I'm not nearly as well traveled as he is, but I've certainly seen a couple of the things he'd mentioned with my own eyes. And I'm frustrated no end by those who have "solutions" to the problems we have in America. Those "solutions" being guaranteed to kill the spirit behind the best country this world has ever seen only to turn us into Far Western Europe.
If you think you have it bad here, lads and lasses, go to sub-Saharan Africa. Or to Beijing and post a picture of Comrade Xi dressed up as Winnie-the-Poo.
We may not be perfect here in the US, but we have the rest of the world faded.
I have long said that no American can truly understand how exceptional America is until they have lived abroad for at least a year. Not a cushioned "semester abroad." Not a year in some cushy "expatriate enclave". Actually living within a foreign culture, among the native people.
Seriously, most of us who have bled for, and will buried under the flag have no issues with carrying the theme of the Stars and Stripes onto clothing, stickers, banners, or other festive decorations.
Is the flag sacred? To many, yes. By the same standard the cross maybe shouldn’t be “worn” in so many places either.
Flag code is for the flag. I’m f Congress saw fit to restrict the use of red and white stripes, and white stars on a blue background to celebrate America then they overstepped and we will pursue the original American sport—disobedience—in that regard as well.
In my 22 years in USN, I was sent many places (Some of them screaming nonono & dragging my heels, but that's another story) - Ian is 100% ABSOLUTELY correct about relative wealth/poverty.
First, I hope all had a safe and enjoyable Independence Day. Second, years ago from one of the embassy officers in India taking immigration applications: "Your poor people are fat." I haven't been further abroad than Cuidad Juaéz, but the differences betwixt Juaréz and El Paso were readily apparent, and ugly. Mexico is more prosperous, overall, than most of Africa.
Your not the only one who has fought and bled and will be buried under the Stars and Stripes. There is a flag code for a reason which you chose to ignore. I chose not to. I chose respect.
If one reads the flag code (scroll down to section 8), it is very evident that the prohibition against apparel applies to the flag itself--i.e., taking a flag and using it as a shirt or dress or whatever. Use of the pattern seems to be permissible.
